Reasons Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary

Typically, we only extract teeth that are causing serious problems for our patients that can’t easily be remedied via any other restorative method. For example, some teeth are damaged by an accident to such an extent that a dental crown will not be able to repair them. Others may become infected to such an extent that root canals and fillings aren’t sufficient.

Sometimes, tooth extractions are done for orthodontic reasons, or to make room for a denture. If this is the case for you, we’ll let you know explicitly why the procedure is necessary for you.

The Process of Removing a Tooth

The process of removing a tooth is typically a simple one, particularly if the tooth is fully above the gumline and is in one piece. In this case, we’ll begin by using local anesthetics to numb the problematic tooth completely, ensuring your complete comfort.

We’ll then use a tool called an elevator to gently lift the tooth out of its socket. Once this is done, we use a set of forceps to gently wiggle the tooth out of place.

At this point, the only thing left to do will be to set you up with whatever tooth replacement method we settled on beforehand. When you’ll get it depends on the particulars of your situation.

Tooth Extraction Aftercare

The process of a tooth extraction itself is fairly simple and involves very little risk—the most common complications occur after the procedure is complete, during the healing process.

Thankfully, you’re fully in control of how well you’ll be able to heal. So long as you adhere to aftercare guidelines, you should be able to recover without any issue.

We’ll give you a full list of aftercare tips when the procedure is complete, but here are a few things to remember in the meantime:

  • Clean the mouth with a gentle saltwater rinse 24 hours after the surgery is complete
  • Take prescribed or OTC medications as directed
  • Avoid smoking or tobacco use
  • Refrain from drinking with a straw, as this can lead to dry socket
  • Get plenty of rest, avoiding strenuous work for the first few days after the extraction

If you have any other questions about your tooth extraction, make an appointment with us and we’ll be happy to talk to you!
